Are the prices live?

Yes. ETH/USD and a suggested Ethereum gas price are fetched on opening and every 60 seconds while visible. Each feed shows its source and retrieval time. A retrieval time is not the time of the underlying market trade. Gas includes a recent block check. Manual edits and shared scenarios are preserved until you select Use live prices. If a feed fails, values remain available but are labelled unavailable or stale; initial example values are never labelled live.

Why can the final fee differ?

Network conditions and actual gas consumed can differ from your assumptions. Contract interactions vary. Check the wallet estimate immediately before signing.

Does this work for layer 2 networks?

Unit conversion does. The fee model here is for Ethereum L1; layer 2 fees may include additional data charges, so this is not an L2 quote.

Do I need to connect a wallet?

No. Calculations run locally. Public data providers receive your IP address and ordinary request metadata when prices refresh, but your calculator inputs are not sent to them. This site has no wallet connection or site-added analytics. Hosting providers receive ordinary web requests, and sharing a scenario puts your inputs in its URL.
