Why “10 Gwei in USD” can mean two different things

Gwei is a denomination of ETH, but it is also the unit normally used to quote Ethereum gas prices. Converting a Gwei amount directly to dollars is different from calculating the dollar cost of a transaction.

1. Gwei as an amount

10 Gwei is 0.00000001 ETH. Multiply that ETH amount by the ETH/USD price to get its dollar value.

2. Gwei as a gas price

A quote such as “10 Gwei” normally means 10 Gwei per unit of gas, not that the entire transaction costs 10 Gwei.

3. Transaction fee

Multiply the gas price by gas used. For a 21,000-gas ETH transfer, 10 Gwei means 210,000 Gwei, or 0.00021 ETH.
